Obituary Mats Johansson
(The following is a text for the Mont Pelerin Society´s News Letter)
Mats Johansson (December 26, 1951 – June 24, 2017) passed away Midsummer Day´s morning in the family´s summer house at the isle of Storholmen in the Stockholm archipelago – unexpectedly and surrounded by his family. His sudden death was chocking for his friends like me as he was hard working and probably felt that he still had essential obligations for the future. His death was widely noticed and commented in the Swedish newspapers. He became member of the Mont Pelerin Society in 1990.
Mats Johansson´s working life can be formally summarized in this way:
He was a Member of the Swedish Parliament and served on the Foreign Affairs Committee (2006-2014) for the governing Moderate party. As a Standing Rapporteur in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe 2011-2013 he published a report about The State of Media Freedom in Europe. As chairman of the Swedish parliamentary network for the Baltic states he was decorated by the republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
In 2015 he started the Foreign Policy Academy, as its first principal, creating an educational unit of the think-tank for students and young politicians.
Mats also returned to journalism, as a columnist in various papers and magazines. He served 2000 – 2003 as Political Editor-in-Chief of the leading daily Svenska Dagbladet (independent moderate conservative) and earlier as CEO/Publisher of the free market think-tank Timbro. He became CEO of Timbro when I was a member of its board.
We miss him.

(Articles June 2017)

Lord Harris of High Cross
